"Southest panel of Drum: Lower Register"

Seventh Century common era (and 72 hijri calender) Umayyad mosaics in the Qubbat al-Sakhra (Dome of the Rock), Masjid al-Aqsa, Jerusalem. Original mosaics attributed to the caliph Abd al-Malik bin Marwan (ruled 685-705 C.E.). The pair of bejewelled wings flanking the central crowned floral bud are variously interpretated as Sassanian royal emblems, as the wings of the heavenly steed Buraq said to carry the Prophet Muhammed on his Night Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem (al-Isra' and Mi'raj).
